The End Of Summer Could Mean The Beginning Of Bed Bug Issues

It’s official, summer is coming to a close, and for students everywhere, the inevitable has become reality; school. The start of the school year can be a big adjustment for parents and their kids, getting used to schedules, reacquainting themselves with homework, and making sure not to forget any textbooks or materials given out by teachers. With all of this noise, it can be easy to get distracted from the small things, in particular, one small thing that’s looking to hitchhike its way into your home; bed bugs.

How to Identify Bed Bugs

All bed bugs go through three stages of major development, and a few minor ones as well.

Egg: Female bed bugs lay eggs in batches of 1-5 at a time, and can lay up to 500 eggs in just a single lifetime. These milky-white colored, 1mm long eggs can be found most often in cracks and crevices.

Nymph: A bed bug goes through four molt stages before reaching sexually mature adulthood. To advance from one stage to the next, each nymph requires a blood meal, and more often than not, this blood meal is found by biting humans. Despite not being fully grown, a nymph bed bug holds a close resemblance to its adult form, with its 6 legs and rounded arrowhead like body. The difference is found in their yellowish-white color bodies.

Adult: In adulthood, a bed bugs body stretches and turns from a yellowish-white to a reddish-brown. Along with this, horizontal intents along their back become more visible.

How to Catch Bed Bugs Before They Invade Your Home

To understand bed bugs, you must first understand how they will try to invade your home. Bed bugs are notorious hitchhikers. They will cling themselves, and their eggs onto any moving surface, usually hidden in the cracks of furniture and the folds of fabrics and clothing. Of course, they are not limited to these options. The more we travel, the greater the chance of unwanted bed bugs trying to cling their way into our homes. This is why it is extremely important to keep an eye out for these unwanted intruders, especially as school in Greenville starts and the holiday seasons are on the horizon.
